Is it incredibly lame to make yourself friendship bracelets? Nah. Well, maybe, but who cares. I don’t believe for a second that all these girls with arms full of them have that many BFFs and I surely don’t (but I couldn’t ask for anything better than the ones I do have!). Anyway, my very best friend for life, my mommy, came over the other day to catch up over old photos I found in my Grandmother’s attic and we ended up sitting and braiding these together – getting great mileage out of my $10 super-sized bag of rainbow embroidery floss. Wore this look out in Santa Monica with Sean, who is a huge fan of the drop-crotch diaper look (not).

While I’m waiting for Fashion Month to be over before I talk about my favorite collections, can we just have a brief BFF love-fest post? Ok, I’ll start. One of my very best friends, Leah (who is no doubt reading this, so hi!) is away in Kenya for a year doing amazing work (it’s so nice to use the word “amazing” in the not-so-hyperbolic sense for a change!) for the Kibera School for Girls and I could not be more proud of her. Luckily we’ve got Skype to make the distance a little less painful and the photos she sends me of the kids are priceless. But I have to make sure she remembers who her first little African baby was! I wish I could go visit her, but I’m super excited to see what textiles and trinkets she brings me back (hint hint, Leah!). Anything in particular I should have her keep an eye out for? Man, I’m selfish.

Your turn.

*You’ve probably noticed those Timex banners on my sidebar? The watch in this post was sponsored by them and I love it! Thank you Timex. FTC compliance here.

ETA: My hair in this post is brought to you by this poodle from a Japanese dog grooming magazine. You just never know where inspiration may strike…

Out of my 6-odd days in NYC, I’d say 4 of them were outfitted from a last minute trip to Goodwill before I left LA. $40 well spent. This, however, isn’t one of those outfits, but there are photos of the aforementioned that I promise to scrounge up later.

I can’t even pretend there was much thought that went into this look, so I won’t expound. However I did successfully pack a single carry-on (a friendly “suck it!” to all those who doubted me) and thus avoided Delta’s $23 bag-check fee (a not-so-friendly “suck it!” to Delta). Subsequently, I tested my restraint and creativity, but luckily I had my new Chloe Docs* that cost a mint (what up, ramen dinner?) but dress up everything. So glad they are finally mine – though as good as they look, the construction is shit. I’ve now had 3 confirmed reports – 1 being my own – of the wedge falling off and needing repair. But I’m really not complaining, I looove them and wore them daily in NYC.

Oh and what, if anything, did you all do for Fashion’s Night Out? Sean and I picked the perfect stoop outside of the Marc store to anti-socially watch the action. Spotted Kanye, Anna & Marc. I personally think FNO should be retired now, since it seems to have lost any of its intent… I could not have been more turned off from shopping than I was that night…

FNO madness aside, I had a fantastic time in NYC! I did close to nothing runway-related, but having a lot of my friends all in one city at the same time was too good to pass up. Though I barely saw everything and everyone I wanted to in such a short stay, so I’ll definitely be back soon!

thrifted shirt with DIY cut-out shoulders, Target pleather riding pants, Forever 21 platforms

I found this button down for $2 at Deseret Industries, the Mormon church thrift store chain in Utah (and apparently there’s one in LA too). At 1XL, it didn’t fit me in that “cool” flowy over-sized way and I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. I was just plain swimming. So I snipped out the shoulders to show a little skin. It’s a cheap and easy modification that really spiced up my $2 mothball scented shirt. And perhaps TMI, but the shoulder cutouts make those last-minute “Shit! I forgot to put on deodorant!” moments way easier. I’m currently holding myself back from snipping every men’s shirt (including Sean’s) in my closet.

And now that I look at everything together, I realize this is a total budget look. Head-to-toe this look cost under $75 and everything but the shoes (because there’s no Forever 21 there) is from St. George of all places. And well, the glasses are Tom Ford but they’re not on my face so it doesn’t count.

In other news, Utah invigorated my life and my style in so many ways. The amazing people I was working with, the scenery, the St. George thrift (my goodness!)… I doubt I have the words to do the experience justice, however I do have a ton more Utah thrift to show-and-tell soon.

As a big Rodarte AND Target fan, I was prepared to do some serious Target-hopping this morning to get my hands on at least 1 of these two dresses.

Lucky for me, I found the entire collection in a nice range of sizes on my first stop (at one of the less picked-over locations in West LA… big hint: Culver City). I knew these two were a must for me. The leopard dress makes me feel all Pebbles Flintstone and I love the bow on the back. And I haven’t had the static issues others seem to be having with the tulle dress, however I am debating cutting it up and making it into a mesh crop top… we’ll see how that one turns out.

As for the rest – my expectations are low for any mass produced diffusion line so, for the price, I don’t bother complaining much about fabrics or fit. I’m generally happy to find even one awesome piece – so I’m really happy with these 2 dresses and the sequin skull dress (which I also grabbed). But I do plan on taking these over to my tailor for a hemline chop (tucked under above).

Opening Ceremony jacket, Target hat, Forever 21 jeans, Jeffery Campbell boots

Anyone else snag anything good?? What was the stock like at your local Target? Reactions to the collection in person?

Oh, and I was definitely one of those assholes this time… I impulsively bought one or two of all the key pieces, since I’ve regretted not doing so in the past and watching the prices skyrocket on eBay. After seeing shit sell out after day 1, I couldn’t help myself.

to be continued…
