blackberry pics from backstage (top: a beautiful D&G dress, below: my model, Alissa, rocking out to Kanye West backstage)
I had a great time as always at this years Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party. This year as opposed to just attending as a guest, I helped out backstage at Milk studios dressing models for the D&G runway show that kicked off the party.
The clothes from the D&G Fall 2009 collection (which I’d pretty much overlooked last season) were stunning to look at, but a little too costume-y for off the runway. What I really fell in love with were the accessories and good lord, THE SHOES! The tapestry tassels could be easily DIYed – and you know I will.
Once done helping out backstage, I headed out front to the party. I had some mild social anxiety since i had gone alone and I’m pretty co-dependent in a party setting, but the Teen Vogue staff was on hand (duh) which quickly put me at ease and I bumped into a number of old friends along the way. Sweet, social crisis averted. The Noisettes performed, the DJ got everyone dancing, and I got caught in the paparazzi frenzy that is Taylor Lautner (or “HEY! TWILIGHT DUDE!!!” as the paps so lovingly called him). What’s been really interesting to note is the shift in Young Hollywood since the first of Teen Vogue’s parties, not a Lindsay or Paris in sight this year, which marked the end of an era of sorts. So far – emphasis on the “so far” – I’d say the new school makes for a better set of role models.
To wrap this up, I had a great night, and the party was over before I turned into a pumpkin – and before most of the guest-of-honors’ curfews!

PS – O hai blog, missed you!!

Dyyyying over this headband designed by Pamela Love & Spike Jonze for an Opening Ceremony x Where the Wild Things Are collaboration. I think it’s even cooler than Max’s crown, though I’ll take one of those too (and one of Pamela’s talon cuffs while we’re at it). Pamela Love is such an amazing and creative jewlelry designer, Opening Ceremony is great as always, and I can’t wait to see what Spike does with the story. I’m actually more excited for Where the Wild Things Are than Tim Burton’s Alice believe it or not (though I loooove Johnny Depp). But I will reserve judgment until I see it though.
I seriously hope this headbad isn’t too obscenly priced, because those horns are too good to DIY, but I would LOVE to get one. Pun intended?

I love that all of these accessories make a statement that is bold enough to stand alone against drainpipes and a simple tee… Which is precisely what I’ve been living in this week, because sometimes I can’t be bothered with anything else, but I still don’t do dainty accessories. A DIY (soon soon) will have to suffice for the Ann Demeulemeester headband ($615!) & leather ribcage corset, but Ms. Zana Bayne can bet I’ll be after one of her harnesses asap.

Made Her Think Talon Ring from Refinery29′s Save Fashion Sale in NYC.
This ring was on my wishlist for a while, so when I got the chance to snatch one up for half-price at Save Fashion, I snatched indeed. It’s silver, not gunmetal, so I’m guessing these were samples, but I love it nonetheless. Even though every guy thinks it’s supposed to be an ear of corn (…), it has landed a permanent spot next to one of my favorite Ninaki rings. Would love to get my hands on the rose gold version next.
Refinery29 put on the best sale I’ve ever been too, so I really hope they set up shop on the west coast soon! More of my Save Fashion buys to come…
and I’ve finally stopped biting my nails!!!! I still nibble a thumb or two sometimes, but this is the first time in years they’ve been long enough to even paint! How’d I kick the habit? Wearing fake nails (silk) for 1 month while they grew out, then using my new ring to inspire upkeep of my natural nails. Hey, it worked.

Ah, Tom Binns! I love his designs so so much, but like… well, pretty much everything these days, I can’t afford them. So his tongue-in-cheek “Get Real” collection gave me faith and a really good laugh.
His laminated magazine collage jewels were a call to arms for the DIY set, and I was ready & packing heat… or an x-acto knife. The original Tom Binns versions sell for $200-ish at Collette, and I like to think even that price was Tom’s own little inside joke. Good one, Tom…
What You’ll Need/What You’ll Do:
- Magazines (Vogue or an old ELLE Accessories work great)
- X-acto Knife
- Scotch Tape or Spray Adhesive
- One trip to Kinkos
- Closure (silk cord, string, safety pin, velcro, whatever)
- Cut out your favorite jewels. My thought process was “Oooh, shiny!”
- Get creative. Collage them together, forming a ‘U’ or ‘O’ shape, trying it on as you go, and using tape or adhesive to hold together until you laminate.
- Optional: make a color photocopy if you want to make more of the same.
- Laminate ($1/sheet at Kinkos).
- Cut out again, fasten, and voila!
This project also works great with just one “pendant” strung on a string, or safety pinned as a brooch. Soooo many possibilities that will make flipping through repetitive jewelry ads way more interesting. I’ve already started on a few more and, if you’re interested, I might put some (including this one) up on Etsy.
