Inspiration: Ashley Banks Style

Ashley Banks' awesome 90s ensemble in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Season 4 clip-show "For Sale By Owner" (1994)

Who can resist a Fresh Prince re-run when it pops up on the TV guide? I definitely can't. In my opinion, it's the BEST 90s sitcom & possibly my favorite on-screen family ever (right alongside the Bluths, the Fishers & the Addams). Come on, Will! Carlton! Jeffrey!?

Anyway, considering the Fresh Prince comes to mind every time someone calls me "DJ Jazzi Jeff!!!" (on average - twice a week, though I like letting everyone think they're totally original in coming up with it. I much prefer "Jazzercize"), I don't know how Ashley Banks has managed to slip my mind as style influence for so long. I should start a blog full of all her awesome outfits! I want to approximate this one asap. Maybe Chloe Sevs can pop it in her next Opening Ceremony collab?

Oh, and yes, that's Donald Trump looking exactly the same in a 1994 cameo. And speaking of Ashley Banks, remember Tatyana Ali's Daydreamin? She was like a mini-Janet Jackson.

Anyone care to walk down 90s memory lane with me? Other favorite families? Shows? My short list: Daria, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, My So Called Life, Roswell, Clarissa & Blossom... and Freaks & Geeks but let's be honest - who actually watched it in the 90s? If you did, props.

All That! I loved that show…actually, I loved almost all the shows that came on Nickelodeon (probably Clarissa Explains it All the most)…but who could forget Martin, In Living Color, and Living Single? Fox had the greatest lineup of shows.

I feel like Fresh Prince was never the same after they “killed off” the first mom Vivian, & replaced her with a new one. Total mindfuck for me. I was like, Whoa… what happened to the darker Vivian? Who is this strange woman?

We never got any answers as to what happened to her… Sad.

lovely. and yes, ashley’s style was always cute. last episode i saw was the one where she was wearing those cute white high-waisted shorts when she was singing ‘respect’ to her parents!

as for the nineties? i agree with u on daria. but how could we forget all that, hey arnold, rugrats, kenan and kel, and a ton of others i can’t think of. :D

My history teacher in 9th grade called me “Daria” all the time for being a misanthropic high school girl. I took that as a major compliment.

So phresh! I loved that show! I can still sing the theme song off the top of my head.

I can’t wait for cluless to come back into style. I missed that, thanks to strict ass parents.

Ironically, I watched all of those shows you listed in the 90s (I was all about them in elementary school). If you haven’t heard, all of the seasons of Daria are available for Pre-order right now on amazon and the dvd is being released next month.

In terms of other shows, people have already mentioned Clarissa Explains it all. There’s also Pete and Pete, Boy Meets World was a big one for me as well as the other TGIF shows, All That, Kenan and Kel, Popular, Twin Peaks. I think those were some that I either watched religiously when they were on except for Twin Peaks which I just got into and LOVE.

lol I watched all those shows too. And Daydreamin? I use to just sit in front of my radio all day and play the single over and over. It was so catchy.

OK, these comments are going to be very telling of my love for Fresh Prince.
1) Isn’t it awesome how Tatyana Ali is a Harvard grad?
2) @Apricot Tea, they got rid of the more awesome mom because she and Will Smith had personality conflicts. He was the star so getting rid of her wasn’t hard. I too was also devastated!
3) 2 of my favorite moments: (1) Ashley being checked out by Carlton at school – “Check out the talent” then Will chimes in “that’s your baby sister” — hilarity ensues. (2) when Carlton and Will are caught stripping and he screams “Mommmy!” YES YES YES!

My favorite show was Living Single hands down. Queen Latifah was the first person who taught be about feminism and I still thank her for it to this day.

I pretty much worshiped Clarissa was I was about 10. Oh, how much I wanted to be a teenager!

The Banks’ are DEFINITELY my top “real” TV family of the ’90s, but as far as cartoons go, can’t deny my nearly life-long love for The Simpsons. Daria is my runner up, and let us not forget Married with Children! Where’s David Faustino, anyway?? VIVA LA GRANDMASTER B!

I loved Fresh Prince and you’re totally right, she had really great style. I wish she’d stuck around after Daydreamin it was so cute.

I’ve been watching Daria lately still so funny. I was always too afraid to watch AYAOTD but I did on few occasions. Definitely grew up on Roswell and Clarissa. Clarissa was so much better than Sabrina.

Never got that into Blossom I think I got to the states too late for that or something idk. When they put My So Called Life back up on Hulu I was totally rewatching for awhile.

daria!! what a girl.
i used to watch the whole tgif lineup…family matters, step by step, boy meets girl ( <3 Shawn Hunter…), two of a kind (starring the Olsens haha)

Ashley did have it going on! Believe it or not, I watched Freaks & Geeks in the 90s. Also love Beverly Hills 90210 – The Brenda Years.

Basically, loved any shows set in a high school or college in the 90s. Still do.

god such amazing 90s style. fresh prince is definitely one of those guilty pleasures. Clarissa was one of my fashion idols growing up & i grew up on NIckelodeon (Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, & Alex Mack were my favorites :)

May 5, 2010 at 7:13 pm

omg! i can’t believe no one mentioned SAVED BY THE BELL!!! Zack Morris was my first love haha. i would watch that almost everyday along with fresh prince, and all the nickelodeon shows like All That, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, The Real World of Alex Mac, Hey Dude, Salute Your Shorts, Kenan & Kel, What Would You Do.

TGIF was the best – step by step, family matters, two of a kind, boy meets world. ahh, such great shows.

I miss those days when people actually watched good TV/no reality shows or internet.
