fyi my sephora didn't have too many glitter polishes, but I bet sally's, ricky's or duane reade will have good (& cheaper) ones!

DIY: Sophy Robson’s Disco Nails

Disco-Nail-DIY-3Disco-Nail-DIY-2Disco-Nail-DIY-1

DIY embellished nails, old Forever 21 fingerless gloves; below: Erykah Badu for Tom Ford’s White Patchouli, nails by Sophy Robson

So I took a stab at someone else’s DIY for change — and not just “someone,” it’s actually a DIY for Elle UK from nail queen Sophy Robson (who probably had a quite literal hand in your favorite campaign this season). She also did the nails in one of my favorite campaign’s ever - Erykah Badu for Tom Ford. These glitter embellished nails screamed “hey, I can do that!” and so I did.

I simplified the DIY a little further by using just glitter polishes in different sizes (found them all for $1 at Sally’s) instead of loose glitter (less messy) and I skipped the rhinestones, but plan to add some later. Elle UK says the look is “perfect for parties” but I think that’s way too obvious. I’ve been rocking these nails with my grungier attire for a dose of contradiction. Sean’s reaction to the nails was “but isn’t glitter kind of tacky?” which usually counts as a success in my book. Check out the DIY instructions at Elle UK and more of Sophy’s work here. What do you think?

[photos by my partner-in-style Natalie Toren]

cast/crew bbq outfit (target skirt, vintage top); beautiful UT; the double rainbow on my first day here; $4 vintage Justin roper boots

I had a whole post I was going to write, but I was on set until 6am and basically, my brain is mush. But I’m having a blast, the vintage is unreal, and I’m learning a ton! So much more to come. You can follow me on twitter & follow the Ben Banks production blog for more regular updates from Utah!

Wish you were here.

Letter From the Editor

letterfromtheed461605

photo from 2008, my last time in hospital attire. because you needed a visual, right?

Hello!

I know it’s been rather quiet around here, so I thought it was time to update my blog with what’s going on IRL. My posting tends to slow down when there’s an excess of real-life matters on my plate, which I guess there is right now.

I will be having surgery early tomorrow morning to correct some issues related to my endometriosis diagnosis from yesteryear. It’s nothing to be concerned about and my biggest concern at the moment is that I can’t eat dinner tonight and that Leo DiCaprio might extract proprietary information from my anesthesia-induced dreams. Inception-style. But as long as JGL is there, I’m cool.

I could say that my medical issues have been keeping from blogging, but that wouldn’t be totally true. I just haven’t been much in the mood. BUT I am marking the occasion to re-light my fire! Especially because…

  1. I recently acquired some cute new shit I’ve been wanting to share (hello, bullet bra, Luxirare cuff, my first pair of designer sunnies, vintage Hieroglyph skirt, et al!)
  2. I will be in Utah (yes, Utah) for a bit doing wardrobe for a rad indie film, so you can expect quite a few updates about my experiences.
  3. I have some DIYs in my mental queue.
  4. I’ve been incredibly inspired (and less domesticated) lately.

I’ve been told (and it’s true) that my sense of humor can be quite morbid, so I’m going to end this post here before I make a bunch of inappropriate funeral-wear/open-casket outfit post jokes…

OMG I’m so sorry, seriously, I am NOT DYING! So, fear not blogging will resume in like… a week! LOVE YOU ALL!

PS – The winners of the giveaway have been chosen and will receive emails before the week’s end!

solestruck-jeffrey-campbell-mary-roks-giveaway

left: Mary Roks in Black **size 9** Retail value $124.95  / right:  Raquel in Grey **size 7** Retails for $119.95

As promised, here is my giveaway with Jeffrey Campbell courtesy of Solestruck! This is my very first giveaway which may explain why it feels a little out of character, but I thought it’d be a really nice way to show some love back to you all. To enter, comment here with which of these 2 you’re entering to win (or if you don’t have a preference, just say so). Make sure to leave your email address in the comment form (which will not appear in the body of the comment, and I won’t sell it or spam you – promise) so I can contact you if you win.

The black (Mary Roks) shoes are a size 9, though I’m an 8 and could fit them with a pair of thick socks. The grey (Raquel) shoes are a size 7 and may also give or take a half-size.

Really sorry I don’t have more sizes but of course you’re more than welcome to enter even if they aren’t your size. Save them to give as a gift or something?

These are both suuuper cute & the Mary Roks booties are one of my favorite JC has come out with to date. Both have sold out in many sizes and colors but check them out for sale & pre-order at Solestruck! And check out JC’s new Fall/Winter 2010 lookbook – there are some killer shoes coming out. Can’t wait.

GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED! Thanks for all your entries, I will announce the winners (chosen at random) soon!

Thank you Ty, JC & Solestruck!

ETA: CONGRATS TO AMBER & BHORANIE! (I’ve emailed you both!)

Vacation-Whine

newsstand-dress-2newsstand-dress

topshop dress; jessica simpson platforms

At this point, a tropical vacation is about as foreign to me as… a tropical vacation. Which is to say, I haven’t been near a body of water that did not exist somewhere off the smog-beaten path in way too long and it’s not in the cards any time soon.

Not that I’m complaining — that 20 minute drive to Malibu ain’t half-bad. I’m just reaching for something to explain why my wardrobe has gone from 0 to a few island prints seemingly overnight. This dress was calling to me from the Topshop website, then it sold out in my size… and that’s when Julia came to the rescue and picked it up for me from the NY store (This is becoming a habit. I’m sorry Julia.). Happy happy joy joy.

In other news, I’m on page 44 of Women’s Health doing a mini-DIY of a white button-up shirt for the August issue! You can pick up a copy or check it out here.
